The Stress-Breathing Connection

The Stress-Breathing Connection

When the patient has been thoroughly evaluated and all test results come back negative, why do unexplained symptoms persist? Why does the patient continue to experience deficiencies in their recovery?

Stress is the single most important contributing factor to the creation and advancement of disease. Stress changes the breathing to help prepare the body for fight-or-flight. Similarly, a sustained faulty breathing pattern, a learned behavior, can cause unfounded stress in the physiology, and it can default the body and mind into a state of survival-unbeknownst to most people. Breathing is evidently natural, and it happens without knowing.

Breathing behaviors can be acquired from life experiences, either positive or negative, and have the capability to disrupt the body chemistry from moment to moment. This can cause severe symptoms and deficits in all aspects of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

Due to carbon dioxide (CO2) being a toxic gas, it is obvious and logical to discard it as an undesired byproduct of metabolism. With the ability to produce sustainable energy, increase mental focus, and reduce nervous tension, normalizing and regulating CO2 is the most powerful, stabilizing, physiological force in the body. Breathing becomes a tool for the patient to gain access to better self-care and self-management.

The usefulness of capnography to monitor ventilation habits, as an educational tool, can be extended to include the instruction of breathing behavior modification and skill training. It acts as a practical tool to measure the patient's quality of ventilation in real time in the context of daily living occupational performance. This allows the patient to discover how his/her breathing is affected in different body positions, when relaxed, and when actively engaged in physical and mental tasks. When the patient is able to perform specific measures in their breathing, he or she can gain control over their outcomes.
